Driven(?) Class Trailering

There is an ongoing discussion (some might say "dispute") over the recent rule change which allows "Driven Class" cars to be trailered to judged events. Dick Cavicke requested feedback regarding this rule from all club members (see his e-mail in the "mailbox" section below).

What's your opinion?

Opinions from various other clubs and judges from the JCNA are available for viewing. If you'd care to read these, e-mail me at wolbachd@spambotdecoy.cox.net (remove "spambotdecoy from that address).

JCGLV 2008 Christmas Party

Doug and Theresa thank all who came, and invite you to take a look at some of the pictures of the evening. (Thanks to AJ for the photos).

Jaguar Club of Greater Las Vegas Food Drive 2008

The food drive was a big success! Thanks to Chris and Sherry for everything they did (which was pretty much everything) and many thanks to all who donated food. The country's current economic woes likely contributed to the fact that - despitene the record-setting food donations this year - far more families this time than in the past found themselves forced to turn to God's Groceries, the beneficiary of the food drive.

The newly elected President Chris assures me that the JCGLV will be looking to do a few more charitable and socially responsible deeds like this one in the near future.

In our mailbox:

From Dick Cavicke:

Dear JCNA Chief Judges,

(If you are no longer your club's Chief Judge, please forward this to the new Chief Judge.)

Driven Division was originally created to increase concours participation by establishing a competitive grouping for cars which were in "regular use". Driven Division did not require judging of the Engine Compartments and Boots, based on the assumption that those components collected dirt from "regular/daily use" and, that the engine in particular, could not easily be brought to the cleanliness standards required in Champion Division.

Also, as a prerequisite for entering Driven Division, its Entries were required to validate their "regular use" by being driven, not trailered, to the concours event. (Driven Division was not intended as a refuge for Jaguars with modified engines or non-authentic engine accessories.)

As I'm sure you all are aware, with no research and little justification, a member of the Board of Directors introduced a rule change at the 2008 AGM which removed the long-standing prohibition of trailering Driven Division Entries. The proposal had not been thoroughly researched among the membership and It had not been properly introduced into the AGM agenda. The delegates ultimately approved the change, despite the fact that none of those present, or the proxies they carried, could possibly have known the opinions of the clubs they were representing.

The JCNA Judge's Concours Rules Committee (JCRC) did not propose the 2008 trailering change and opposes it because it blurs an important distinction between Champion and Driven Divisions. In 2008, from all reports, the change alienated more competitors, than it served to encourage new ones.

As highway and general traffic conditions become less and less friendly for early automobiles, the Driven Division "regular use" requirement may no longer be appropriate for its early model Jaguars. JCRC is aware of this circumstance and will continue to consider possible alternatives.

Meanwhile, JCRC will, at the 2009 AGM, propose rescinding the 2008 Driven Division trailering allowance. If required, by administrative procedure, the change may be delayed until the 2010 competitive year; otherwise, it will be effective in 2009.

JCRC values your first hand experience in such matters and always wants the rules to reflect your collective opinions along with our own. As you let down from your Christmas, New Year and holiday activity, I would appreciate hearing from you regarding this matter; in particular, do you or do you not support trailering of Driven Division Entries? Please indicate the name of your club in your response.

Thanks and regards,
Dick Cavicke
JCNA Chief Judge
Chair, JCRC
